Stars of the Lid is a band specializing in drone-based ambient music. They list among their influences minimalist and electronic composers such as Arvo Pärt, Zbigniew Preisner, Gavin Bryars, and Henryk Górecki, as well as Talk Talk, post-rock artists Labradford, and ambient innovator Brian Eno [1]. Their songs are largely beatless soundscapes, composed of droning, effects-treated guitars along with piano, strings, and horns; volume swells and feedback fill the gap of rhythmic instruments, providing dynamic movement within the songs. Their sound has been described as "divine classical drones" without the tedious intrusion of drums or vocals.

Formed in Austin, Texas in 1993 by Adam Wiltzie, the band has two members — Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie. Both have released solo material, the former under his own name and the latter under the Dead Texan alias. Their most recent album, a double-LP named Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid, was released in 2001 to generally positive reviews. Adam Wiltzie now lives in Brussells, Belgium and Brian McBride in Los Angeles.

Ich habe die Avec Laudenum. Klasse. Aber waren die je in Europa? Ich glaube nicht. So ne scheibe ist leider noch die Ausnahme in meiner Sammlung. Du kannst bestimmt mehr empfehlen was Dem entspricht, oder?

Stars of the Lid machen gewissermaßen positiven Drone. Die Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid hab ich als 3LP seit Jahren hier rumstehen, bin ich aber mit wenigen Ausnahmen nie richtig mit warm geworden, da ich sie schon lange vor meiner Drone-Zeit hatte. Dennoch eine Band, die ich schon damals wirklich bewundert habe. Sind in ihrer Richtung ein ziemliches Unikat. Von allen Stars of the Lid Alben gefällt mir die Ballasted Orchestra mit Abstand am besten. Demnächst mal anschaffungswürdig.

"positiver" drone macht find ich sehr spass ... ganz oben auf meiner liste growing ich mag diesen "hummelflug" sound sehr ....... muss nicht immer grim as possible sein

Ach, wie wunderschön ist das, sich die Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid nach langjähriger Abstinenz mit neu erwachsenem und gereiftem Verständnis für die Stille und Langatmigkeit und deren einzelne Nuancen in endlosen repetitiven Dronepassagen zu Gemüte zu führen und sich dabei zu fragen, wie einem damals die wunderbare Schönheit der Musik verschlossen bleiben konnte, als man das Album noch mit dem Urteil 'völlig ereignislos' in seine Reihen zurückbeförderte...
