Analysis of Bison Kills were formed in the summer of 2001 under the initial name of Tear Gas and Plate Glass. Our aim was to create simple, heavy and crushing music as a 2 piece. We wanted to capture the all out heaviness of the doom/sludge genre whilst also retaining a very melodic and epic song based approach. We tried to create music that was recognizably rooted in the doom/sludge genre whilst also attempting to add something fresh and contemporary to the mix. The whole project began as a bit of fun to while away the summer, just us playing whatever came to mind during those months. It turned out that the resulting songs were half decent so we decided to put them out in the form of our first 3 track self titled demo. Much to our surprise the demo received very positive reviews and earned us a few fans in the underground. Most of 2003 was spent working on new material. The overall approach changed this time. Analysis of Bison Kills had become much more than just a summertime distraction. We spent a lot more time writing new songs. There was a conscious effort to expand our sound and make it something far more personal and expressive. Something we could truly call our own. The songs have become multi-layered and more complex. We have certainly tried to take our music to a new level. It was at this point that using a drum machine became a little limiting. To remedy this we expanded our line up to include a live drummer, in the form of Andries van den Boom, an old friend of ours from the Netherlands. Andries had never really played any doom/sludge and was more at home playing technical death/black metal or jazz. In spite of our initial reservations, his complete ignorance of the genre gave the project the kind of fresh sound we were looking for. The bulk of our 2nd demo The Sea Stranded Whipjack was again recorded at home on an 8-track. These recordings were then taken to db Studios in Lincoln where we tracked live drums and mixed the whole lot. We are very happy with the results and feel it is a big leap forward in musical terms. I hope you enjoy our music.
